Cheerleading and pop

BK1 (6 next month) realised her school offered cheerleading lessons. I feigned ignorance (I had seen the slip she brought home from school, but had promptly discarded it). I finally gave in though and enrolled her as her best friend attends the cheerleading classes.

I mean cheerleading! It hardly qualifies as a sport, no?

Anyway, the next day after her first session, BK1 and BK2 are sat in the living room playing. Then
BK1: "You change your mind, like a girl changes clothes, you're hot and you're cold, you're yes and you're no ..."
Me: "Where did you learn this?"
BK1: "Cheerleading"

Grrrr. I mean she is not even 6 yet. I think it is a bit too early for her to sing pop songs (particularly Katy Perry!), or is it?
Thinking about it, I grew up with pop songs. From as far as I can recall, I was exposed to my dad's pop tastes: Beatles, Bee Gees, Boney M, Abba etc. The difference is that I did not speak English when I was 6, I did not have a clue what the lyrics meant. BK1 does. And I will find it increasingly difficult to shield my children from some pop songs of dubious taste...

  1. Heh, I grew up on ABBA and Boney M, too - thankfully I also didn't have a clue as to what any of it meant :)

My eldest, 6 in June, took ballet in the winter (also not entirely supported/initiated by us....) and learned a little ditty about toes being bad when they are in their natural position and toes being good when they are stretched to their limits.

We almost had a cow - though we are very glad she found ballet to be boring and didn't want to us to sign her up again :)

  2. Yes, same here re the good and naughty toes. Naughty (understand méchant) is a no-no word in our house; a bit wierd when it is used by educators ... Anyway, BK1 also gave up ballet the week after I bought her new ballet shoes!!

  3. Eden has just started with a cheerleading team, her gymnastics skills were sought after. It does seem to old fashioned me that cheerleading isn't a proper sport like gymnastics, but Eden loves it.

  4. I am old fashioned too Jeanette, and in my mind cheerleading is about wearing skimpy outfits and singing naff slogans ... Maybe you're right that cheerleading is a real sport, I have to leave my prejudice aside. I am still not keen on the music though!

  5. Hi. Just discovered your blog! I live in the US and speak German (non-native) and English with my 15-month-old son.
I, too, grew up with pop music. But even though I was an English-speaker, I really didn't understand the words. Hope that's comforting :) I do remember, though, babysitting for a 7-year-old who was singing the Spice Girls. Gaaaaaaaah!

  6. I wanna, I wanna really really really wanna zigazig ha., so poetic isn't it? :)
It is indeed true that BK1 may still not understand some pop songs, not knowing what certain words mean. Mind you, one of her favourite songs that we play in the car is "American Boy" which is not particularly suitable for a 6-year old (holding my head down in shame).
